With the advent of Christianity, Hellenism became deeply intertwined with the Eastern Orthodox Church, the faith which rendered our ancient mythology to the realm of classical studies. No study of the perpetuation and preservation of Hellenic culture would be complete without considering the influence of its church as part of the foundation and fabric of the modern Greek experience, regardless of continent.
Through its archives and collections, HPS is a protector and conservator of an assortment of unique historical items that document Hellenic history in Ohio. Our Collection includes historical photos and documents, reference materials and periodicals, ethnic costumes, embroidered textiles, pottery, commemorative and decorative household pieces, liturgical items, iconographic art, and more. It is our goal to increase the circulation of our collections for the benefit and education of Hellenes and society at large.
In a more active capacity, HPS is an educational organization that sponsors or supports relevant cultural events such as lectures, art exhibits, concerts, drama, dancing demonstrations, book signings, fashion shows, social events, numerous ethnic festivals and much more. These events are the bulwarks of our outreach program to our constituency.
Insofar as HPS is a charitable organization, it is fully reliant on the financial support of our membership, friends, and other cultural partners. We can only continue our programs at the behest of your generosity and your financial support, for which we are ever grateful. Your sponsorship helps us grow and preserve our Archives and Collections which document the immigrant experience of the Greeks in Northeastern Ohio, support the Annual Collis Lecture at the Cleveland Museum of Art, and provide speakers and programs of interest to the entire community.
