Drawn in the upper right hand corner is a standing figure with a bird-like face in a red vest with a yellow skirt and hat with a red ribbon. Underneath this is written “Oct 23rd”. Written in the lower right hand corner is “With All My Love Daddy” and an arrow pointing to the upper right corner with “Happy Birthday”. The center is a drawing of a multi-colored (black, yellow, brown and white) bird with a red and black head on a tree limb. At the head of the bird is “Dimitra Darling”. At the lower left hand corner is an arrow with “the Maseger”. The upper left hand corner has a red outlined heart with “I.L.Y.” inside. Used by Chris Kennes, contributing reporter for Greek language newspaper, “Kuriua” printed in New York City. Metal tyepwriter, all keys with Greek letters, except “Tabulator key”, “Back Spacer”, “CAP”, and “FIG”. Molle written in large letters across the the top where paper is inserted. Molle Typewriter Company also written on botton front of the machine. The tyepwriter is black. The space bar is wood and is painted black but damaged slightly, exposing wood, 1913-1918. Gift of Charlotte LajoeCopper mailbox. Rectangular with an angled lid (approx. 45 degrees) hinged at the top rear edge. The top lid has a horizontal raised opening (mail slot) at its center. A hinged latch is riveted to the front bottom edge of the lid. The latch opening slides over a post with a lock hole. The front has stamped tooling marks that depict tree branches with leaf patterns, four stars, two star burst (right and left side) and two arched patterned designs. Also stamped are two bird forms on the right and left sides which appear to be holding an envelope (letter) in their beaks, and is framed within two horizontal bands. The right and left side of the mailbox have stamped tooling marks that are mirror images of a single arched patterned design positioned above tree branches with leaf patterns. The top lid has hammered arches that surround the mail slot and the four ‘button’ forms at each corner. Two brackets are attached to the top back to accommodate hanging. The base material is copper which has been treated with a flash tin coating. The coating has been burnished to expose the base copper material. The interior of the object has been painted black. Single piece of straw on upper & lower rims creating several triangular patterns with smaller triangles of straw on the peak of each triangle. On the exterior similar ‘V’ patterns occur. The largest ‘Vs’ are a faded green. Underneath peak of where ‘Vs’ meet is a similar smaller pattern in same tan color of straw. Colors used in decoration are red, green, orange, olive green. The bottom of basket is highly decorative with circular patterns confined by disk shape with 6 peaks No decorative elements on interior of basket. Handmade, vegetable dyes, c 1940s. Gift of Rose VourlisCeramic plate depicting Peleus and Thetis. Peleus extends his right arm and left leg out to Thetis and hers is extended behind him appearing to be touching a snake along the backside of Peleus. Thetis is looking slightly down while Peleus gazes at her. There is a fish on the right side of the plate. The two are figures are portrayed in white contrasting the black plate. The border of the plate is in brown and has the Greek key. The back has holes for hinges. Gift of Prudence MontagueCeramic plate depicting the abduction of Thetis by Peleus. Thetis is bent over at a 90 degree angle towards Peleus. Both of their heads look down. Peleus holds in his right hand his robe and around his wrist is a snake. In front of his left forearm is a lion walking vertically along Thetis’ back. Another snake is wrapped around Thetis’ arms and around her left leg. Peleus wears extravagent robes. The figures are mostly white on a black background. A brown trim runs along edge of plate that has the Greek key. Imprint on back: KERAMIKOS ATHENS GREECE HAND MADE The Abduction of Thetis By Pelus, 20th c. Gift of Prudence MontagueAHEPA medal. The upper portion of the medal appears bronze colored metal with Detroit written on the top and images of the city with a plane, car, and coin that says “city of Michigan”. The middle section of the medal is fabric red, white, and blue that says “alternate 6th annual convocation Detroit Aug 27-31. The bottom of medal is same bronze colored metal with the AHEPA cross, swords, and laurel wreath with the eagle flying on top. “AHEPA” is written on the top of this.
