Description: This ceramic plate image is depicting the abduction of Thetis by Peleus. After Zeus and Poseidon were discouraged from marrying Thetis, a Nereid, due to a prophecy that her son would be stronger than the father, the mortal Peleus took upon the task. However, Thetis could escape any threat of capture by turning into different forms. Peleus was given advice to conquer her magic by holding onto her throughout the metamorphosis until she returned to her original state. Through the marriage of Peleus and Thetis, Achilles the great warrior was born.
